Op-Art
Third Grade students learned about Victor Vasarely, the "grandfather" of Op-Art and created their own Op-Art artwork. They tried to make the illusion of a 3D object on a 2D paper. Two third grade classes created 3D spheres and two classes created 3D hands, hearts and cones. They also learned about double bubble thinking maps. They created one by comparing and contrasting two artworks: Victor Vasarely's "Vega" and Georgia O'Keeffe's "Black Petunia and White Morning Glory". Materials: pencils, black or colored markers. Connections to Math.

"No Place for Hate"
Third Grade students took part of our school-wide program of "No Place for Hate", for promoting peace, love, friendship, diversity, tolerance and acceptance. The students learned about the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso with his "Peace" artworks, and the American artist Faith Ringgold with her mixed media quilts. The students also learned about symbols and how symbols represent an idea, or the artists' personal experiences. They created a wall quilt by putting their artworks together. Students had to come up with their own love and peace symbols or words for their artworks. They traced their symbols/words with black sharpie and then colored them with colored sharpies. Connections to Cultural and Community influences in the Arts.
