Abstract Guitars
Fifth Grade students learned about the American abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock and the Spanish cubist artist Pablo Picasso and his blue period. They created an abstract painting by using marbles dipped in paint. They had to choose one of the color groups (Color theory: primary, secondary, complimentary, warm, cool and monochromatic 'tints and shades'). They learned about guitars and filled in a circle map with facts about them. They created their own template of a guitar and copied it on their painting. Then they cut it and glued it on colored construction paper of their choice. They also created different musical notes, which they glued around their guitar to make a nice composition. Some students created acoustic guitars and some electric guitars. For the strings they used thin yarn and construction paper. Connections to Music and Math (symmetry, asymmetry).

Blind Contour and Contour
Fifth Grade students learned about blind contour and contour drawing, and the functions of the human brain. They learned what the left side of the brain is responsible for and what the right side of the brain can do. They practiced drawing exercises by accurately drawing what they observe instead of drawing what they think the object looks like. They used pencils only for the drawing of their hand.

Grid self-portraits
All Fifth Grade students learned about portraits, grids, and the artist Chuck Close, who painted very large grid portraits from his wheelchair. The Fifth graders created their own grid self-portrait using pencil. They enlarged their 4x6 black and white portrait/photo by transferring it onto a 12x18 drawing paper. They also learned about values and practiced the values of black and white on their self-portrait. Connections to Math. |

Tie-Dye Bandanas
Fifth grade students learned about tie-dye and different techniques of tie-dye, like spiral, bulls eye, and lines/stripes. The tie-dyed bandanas were made in different ways by tying up the bandana with rubber bands and applying different colored dyes. The students were very excited to keep the bandanas that they made. |
