Observational drawing from real leaves
Second Grade students learned about observational drawing, outline, template, cropping, warm and cool colors, blending, and composition. They also learned about the American artist Georgia O'Keeffe and her large cropped flowers and leaves. The students drew their individual leaf by observing it carefully and created a template by cutting it. Then they traced their template as many times as they wanted on their paper by trying to crop some of them to create a nice composition. They painted the leaves by blending warm colors for more natural effect, and painted the background with cool colors.

New York Birds and Bird Watching
Second Grade students learned about the American artist, author, and ornithologist John Audobon and his extensive studies and paintings of birds. They pretended to be bird watchers by using binoculars out of paper tubes and watching bird pictures that were hung around the classroom. They were also watching birds through the classroom windows. They created their own sketchbooks and drew/wrote about a bird of their choice from the ones hanging around the classroom. Then they drew their bird on a larger scale and colored it with colored pencils. They also learned how to create texture for the feathers with colored pencils. Connections to Science.
