Blind Contour and Contour
Fifth Grade students learned about blind contour and contour drawing, and the functions of the human brain. They learned what the left side of the brain is responsible for and what the right side of the brain can do. They practiced drawing exercises by accurately drawing what they observe instead of drawing what they think the object looks like. They used pencils only for the drawing of their hand.

Pop-Art Grid Self-Portrait
Fifth Grade students learned about grids, portraits, self-portraits and about the American artist Chuck Close and his huge grid portraits. They created their grid portrait by drawing the lines, box -by- box, from the small photo to their large grid paper. They also learned about Pop-Art (popular Art) and the American artist Roy Lichtenstein. He created large paintings with dots influenced by popular comics at the time. The students slightly colored each section with a different color and created colored dots on them to match each section. Connections to Math.
