Fifth Grade students learned about the artist Cathy Sheeter and her collectible scratch artworks. They created their own scratch artwork by using paper, crayons, black tempera paint and pointy wooden sticks to scratch their own design on the self-made scratch board.

Blind Contour and Contour
All Fifth Grade students learned the techniques on how to draw the contour of their hand by observing it. They used pencils, only.

Grid self-portraits
All Fifth Grade students learned about portraits, grids and the artist Chuck Close, who painted very large grid portraits out of his wheelchair. The Fifth graders created their own grid self-portrait out of pencil. They enlarged their 4x6 black and white portrait onto 12x18 drawing paper. They also learned about values and practiced the values of black and white on their self-portrait. Connections to Math.

Fifth Grade students learned about script/cursive writing and symmetry. They also learned facts about insects. They practice their name in cursive letters and learned how to transfer their name on the other half of the paper. They had to transform their name into an insect by adding different features, patterns or lines. They used pencils, and colored sharpies. Connections to Literacy, Science and Math.
