First Grade classes learned about organic and geometric shapes, overlapping, collage, and the French artist Henri Matisse. They created their own collage out of organic shapes by using pencils to draw their shapes and construction paper. Connections to Math.

Printed Poinsettia
First Grade classes learned about printing and specifically printing with unconventional materials. They also learned why the poinsettia plant is used during the winter holidays and how the poinsettia got its name, with Tomie dePaola's book “The Legend of Poinsettia”. They printed the poinsettia's petals and leaves out of Styrofoam plates. They also learned how to print and paint with tempera paint, using warm and cool colors. Connections to Science, and Literature.
