Pine cones or Crumbled Paper
Fifth Grade students learned about the human brain and its functions; specifically the right side of the brain - the creative side - the one that sees details first. They also learned about blind contour, contour, and shading. They practiced what they learned by drawing with blind contour (0% looking at their paper), contour (25% looking at the paper) and 50/50 looking at their paper and the pine cone or the crumbled paper. Grid Self-Portraits
Fifth Grade students learned about grids, portraits, self-portraits and about the American artist Chuck Close and his huge grid portraits. They created their grid portrait by cutting their picture in half, glue half of it on the grid and draw the other half to finish the whole picture. Connections to Math.

Monochromatic Still Life
Fifth grade students learned about Still Life, tints, shades, tones, value scale and monochromatic paintings. They drew their own still life from real life observation and painted it monochromatic (one color and its values). Connections to Color Theory.
