Winter Landscapes: Tints and Shades
Fourth Grade students learned about landscapes and especially winter landscapes. They also learned about the French artist Claude Monet and the Russian artist Isaac Levitan. Both artists painted winter landscapes. Students learned Color Theory and how to make tints (by adding white to a color) and shades (by adding black to a color). Two of the fourth grade classes created birch trees in winter by making the trees with painter's tape. The other two classes created free hand silhouettes. Materials: White, black and blue liquid tempera, brushes, painter's tape, toothpicks and wooden sticks for mixing the tempera and creating details.

Bamboo Ink painting
Fourth Grade students learned about China and Chinese culture, by comparing and contrasting the USA and the American culture in a double-bubble thinking map. They learned about the bamboo plant and its uses, about bamboo pens and brushes, about Chinese calligraphy and about rice paper. Students were introduced to ink washes and ink painting. They first practiced on a regular paper and then they painted their own bamboo plant on rice paper. They wrote their names from top to bottom as in Chinese writing and calligraphy. Connections to Social Studies and Science.

Abstract 3D sculpture
Fourth Grade students learned about 3D, about abstract artworks and about sculpture. They also learned about the Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi and his abstract piece "Bird in Space". They created their own 3D abstract sculpture by using wood, tights, gesso and tempera paint. Connections to Math.
