Color Wheel
First Grade students learned color theory through the color wheel with primary and secondary colors. They created a color wheel by writing their names in bubble letters and divided their paper in six sections. Other students chose to create a color wheel by drawing an umbrella with six sections (3 for primary colors and 3 for secondary colors.)

"Giraffes Can't Dance"
Some First Grade classes read the book "Giraffes Can't Dance" by Giles Andreae and filled in a circle map with facts about giraffes. Then they learned how to draw an animal by using lines and shapes. They drew their dancing giraffe, cut it and then glued it on their painted background with a night scene. They also learned how to mixed tempera paint, and how to create the grass. They used two colors and scratched the top layer with the back of their brush. Connections to Literature, Science and Math.

First Grade students learned about the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee and his abstract cityscapes. They also learned about squares, triangles, and rectangles. They put together right isosceles triangles to create squares for their buildings and they chose their cityscape in day or night. They used construction paper and crayons specific for coloring on construction paper. Connections to Math.
