Dear Parents,
In the Studio Art program, for the months of March and April, the students will learn and create:
Kindergarten: Create seasonal artworks (caterpillar/butterfly), learn about the butterfly’s life cycle, and continue the Elements of Art line, color, shape, and texture. They will also learn about printing with unconventional materials like balloons. With every lesson, students practice fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and following directions. Introduction to liquid tempera paint. Connections to Science and Literature (Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar").
First Grade: Learn about India, and create Dhurrie rugs out of construction paper and yarn. Connections to Social Studies.
Second Grade: Continue learning about mascots (lions), how to draw by following lines, blending, and painting with tempera paint. Connections to Science and Literature. Artist: Henri Rousseau.
Third Grade: Continue "No place for hate", a project about peace, love, acceptance, friendship, and also about quilts. Students will also learn about symbols and create their own. Connections to Cultural and Community influences in the Arts. Artists: Pablo Picasso and Faith Ringgold.
Fourth Grade: Continue learning about Chinese culture, and bamboo painting with ink. Connections to Science and Cultural Influences in the Arts.
Fifth Grade: Continue learning about portraits, grids, contour drawing (drawing by following the outlines of an object), and shading. Connections to Math. Artist: Chuck Close.

They will also learn about rockets, and primary and secondary colors (color theory). Connections to Literature, Science and Math.
First Grade: create seasonal artworks (penguins), learn about printing, symmetry, crayon resist, and painting with tempera paint. Connections to Literature, Math and Science.
