"WORDS CAN HURT"
Fifth Grade students participated in an activity about anti-bullying. They were instructed to create two identical fast sketches of their best friend in about five minutes. They wrote their own names on both of the papers and the name of their friend as well. They were asked to come up with kind words to tell the drawing of their friend. They also had to come up with unkind words. Every time that they said an unkind word, they had to crumple the paper, punch it, step on it and even rip a part of it off. Then they were instructed to open it up and try to make it the same way that it was before. They compared it with the one that was left untouched. The students realized by themselves that when they say something mean to their friends, they hurt their feelings and scar them for life, without being able to take their words back! After that, the students had to write an apology letter on the paper that they crumpled. The students also took part in a discussion about not taking part in dares, but instead stand up for what is right and just! This was a powerful lesson in this phase of their life!!!
