Observational Drawing and Seashells
Fifth Grade students learned about the human brain and its functions; specifically the right side of the brain - the creative side - the one that sees details first. They also learned about blind contour, contour, and shading. They practice what they learned by drawing with blind contour (0% looking at their paper), contour (25% looking at the paper) and 50/50 looking at their paper and the seashell. |

Grid Self-Portraits
All Fifth Grade students learned about portraits, grids, and the artist Chuck Close, who painted very large grid portraits from his wheelchair. The Fifth graders created their own grid self-portrait using pencil. They enlarged their 4x6 black and white portrait/photo by transferring it onto a 12x18 drawing paper. They also learned about value scale and practiced the values of different hues on their self-portrait. Connections to Math and Color Theory. |
