Blind Contour and Contour
Fifth Grade students learned about blind contour and contour drawing, and the functions of the human brain. They learned what the left side of the brain is responsible for and what the right side of the brain can do. They practiced drawing exercises by accurately drawing what they observe instead of drawing what they think the object looks like. They used pencils only for the drawing of their hand.

Pop-Art and Observational Drawings: Sneakers
Fifth Grade students continued their observational drawings. They learned about the Pop Art movement and the famous New York artist, Roy Lichtenstein. They learned how to make connections with art periods, artists, their own artwork, and how to build drawing skills. They drew their sneakers by observing every detail closely and measuring with their pencils instead of a ruler, which is a skill that a lot of artists have used throughout the history of art, especially with their landscapes.

Grid self-portraits
All Fifth Grade students learned about portraits, grids, and the artist Chuck Close, who painted very large grid portraits from his wheelchair. The Fifth graders created their own grid self-portrait using pencil. They enlarged their 4x6 black and white portrait/photo by transferring it onto a 12x18 drawing paper. They also learned about values and practiced the values of black and white on their self-portrait. Connections to Math.
